Random Ramblings of a Ragamuffin: Things That Annoy Me → iandsharman.tumblr.com

iandsharman:

I often come across aspiring comic book artists whose sole focus is breaking in to Marvel or DC. All they seem to do is work on their sample pages, send them in, and then either hear nothing back or get a polite rejection letter…and this leads them to ultimately give up.

This is nuts!

This is akin to wanting to start your footballing career as a regular in the first team at Manchester Untied. Or wanting your band to play their first gig at Wembley Stadium.

You’ll find that the vast majority of people working in comics have a substantial body of small press and indie work behind them before they do any work for Marvel or DC.

So, yes, sure, send in your samples, that’s all well and good…go to portfolio reviews at conventions…that’s great… But, first and foremost, get making comics! Get involved in the small press and indie scene where you’re at. If you’re at a convention, don’t just take your portfolio to the Marvel or DC review session…take it around to the small press and indie stands. Find someone to work with.

And most importantly of all…and I can’t stress this enough…follow up after the convention. Don’t expect people to come chasing after you to work with them…make sure that people know that you are available to work, and email them samples of your work, don’t expect them to remember who you are and what your work looks like after the convention…everyone speaks to hundreds of people over a convention weekend.

^This.

DC Universe Online?

I’ve recently gotten this game on pc and created a character inspired by the lead in my comic Kato Marucci on the EU server Reality Lost.

It seems that I may have glitched a mission though- just done one mission in Banes distribution centre, took out his supplier with Nightwing… And now another mission says I need to take the same guy out and arrest him… Which is what I’d already done. Now I just keep getting told, enter dist centre, leave dist centre…. Arrgh…

Doctor Who

One thing I’m curious about the new Who… Since it’s getting closer how are they going to sidestep the “Time Lords only have 13 regenerations” thing?

The Selchie Warrior: Unpopular opinion → selchieproductions.tumblr.com

Watched an episode of Doctor Who - i.e. the one with the new doctor, and he really isn’t as funny as David Tennant was. Might have been because of the episode, but nah.

Nah.

It’s not a comedy…

You want unfunny? Try the Sixth Doctor.

Let me put it like this then - where David Tennant succeeded in making me watch an entire episode without having me changing the channel, mainly because he managaed to mix fun and an adventurous mind, Matt Smith doesn’t. He lacks the energy David Tennant had - and this is me judging both actors after having seen a relatively few episodes of either number of Doctor. He just seems like an incredibly boring person, the first ‘oh, I’m so young and out of touch with reality’ worked for about a second, and then I was bored.

I’m not saying that Matt is a bad actor, he isn’t, he’s a good actor, what I’m saying is that I wasn’t a big fan of Dr Who in the first place and the reason I watched it occasionally when David Tennant was the doctor boils down to the fact that Catherine Tate used to be his sidekick, so, no, sorry, but I won’t be following the new doctor’s adventures.

Fair enough. Personally I thought Tennant made a great Doctor, he had the energy, eccentricity and madness that made the character in the first place. My one issue with Tennant’s era was that RTD didn’t know how to write Doctor Who, and certainly didn’t know how to write for Tennant. Toward the end of the Tennant era the writing improves and he shines.

I’m not a massive fan of “new Who”, in fact, I’d much rather watch the Doctors 1-8 than any of the new guys. The only thing that makes me like Matt though is that, in a strange way, he reminds me of Troughton and Pertwee.

I know that this is probably a really really stupid question though, but why do you draw boobs so much? Won't that be a bit of a challenge if any male characters are included in FERA?

There are male characters appearing in Fera… including an upcoming major character, but I think in his case the challenge won’t be drawing a character without boobs. It’ll be drawing a character who is barely humanoid.

I draw boobs, and women more often for a simple reason. I’m really crap at drawing guys. Mostly because of the difference in lines when drawing the two. With women it’s mostly curved lines, with guys lines tend to be harsher and more angular.

As a result, when I draw guys they always look vaguely feminine anyway.

Arrgh...

I NEED to draw a comic page… but… DC Universe Online arrived about an hour ago and it’s sitting on my desk looking forlorn… must resist urge to install it…
