Here’s a familiar, mundane scenario: you’ve got an iPhone with loads of music on it. And you’ve got a laptop with a new album on it. You want to put the new album on your phone. But you can’t hook them up and simply drag-and-drop the files like you could with, ooh, almost any other device. Instead, Apple insists you go through iTunes.
Microsoft gets a lot of stick for producing clunky software. But even during the dark days of the animated paperclip, or the infuriating “.docx” Word extension, they never shat out anything as abominable as iTunes – a hideous binary turd that transforms the sparkling world of music and entertainment into a stark, unintuitive spreadsheet.
Plug your old Apple iPhone into your new Apple Macbook for the first time, and because the two machines haven’t been formally introduced, iTunes will babble about “syncing” one with the other. It claims it simply MUST delete everything from the old phone before putting any new stuff on it. Why? It won’t tell you. It’ll just cheerfully ask if you want to proceed, like an upbeat robot butler that can’t understand why you’re crying.
This is a sensational column, that I highly recommend reading.
…I don’t consider myself a douchebag for thinking “Baa Baa Black Sheep” shouldn’t have been altered for “political correctness”.
I agree- “Baa Baa Black Sheep” is sang as such because black wool was fairly rare and therefore a valuable item for trade in rural areas… changing it to “Baa Baa Fluffy Sheep” or “Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep” not only makes little sense in and of themselves but also in the wider context.
Even if you were to take “baa baa black sheep” as a racial reference, it is still intentionally celebrating the unique, rare and special quality of the black wool. Surely then it is a celebration of those qualities as opposed to making any kind of negative remark?
I’m not much of a fan of the show, but after watching the latest episode and being amused when “a billionaire with tons of gadgets” and “a wondrous woman who will throw (Clark) for a loop” was mentioned… I decided to look up the episode list/titles for the rest of the season.
It would seem that within the next SIX episodes, Clark should have donned the cape and tights… and one of those six episodes is called “Booster”… I can only assume that one of my favourite DC heroes may be making an appearance soon.
Hm, possibly #8 since I quite like his costume and I did at one point have hair like his (and still would if I cut it a little shorter).
A boring person with an interesting life… go on, ask you know you want to :P
